MOSCOW. Feb 13 (Interfax) - Alexei Pushkov, chairman of the State Duma Committee On International Affairs, believes Syrian President Bashar al-Assad could regain control over Syria if it was not for the active external interference.
"Assad will fight till the end. He has no choice. He still controls the army and the special services. I think Assad could regain control over the country if it wasn't for the large-scale financial and organizational support and supplies of weapons from abroad," Pushkov told a press conference at the Interfax central office on Wednesday.
Pushkov said he believes that "Assad is right to say that he is fighting an international plot."
Pushkov also believes there is a very serious element of external involvement in the situation in Syria, which he believes "creates a situation of bloody balance when the opposition can't significantly expand its positions and the government can't regain full control over the country."
Pushkov also thinks the United States believes that it will gradually recognize Russia's arguments on the evaluation of the situation in Syria.
"Specifically, they have recognized that a collapse of the administrative structure in Syria can have very negative consequences. The rebels don't have any administrative structure. The government has an administrative structure. The Americans have realized that we will get a second Afghanistan if everything collapses again," Pushkov said.
