Opposition rally, march in Yerevan ended without incidents

YEREVAN. Feb 25 (Interfax) - A rally and a march of thousands of protesters organized by the Armenian opposition party Heritage finished in Yerevan on Friday.

The protests were supervised by police and passed without incidents, an Interfax correspondent reported from the scene. Heritage party leader and former Foreign Minister Raffi Ovannisian, who came in second in the recent presidential elections, thanked police for maintaining law and order during the demonstration.

"A long struggle for the people's rights is ahead, and we will win," Ovannisian told his supporters in conclusion of the march on Freedom Square in the center of Yerevan.

He asked the participants to go home.

Speaking at the rally earlier on Friday, Ovannisian said President Serzh Sargsyan and he failed to reach a compromise at a Thursday meeting. Ovannisian earlier claimed victory in the February 18 elections and refused to recognize their official results publicized by the Central Elections Commission, which proclaimed Sargsyan the winner.

Ovannisian also announced the beginning of protest rallies across the country.
