Second round of Iran-P5+1 talks starts in Almaty

ALMATY. Feb 27 (Interfax) - Almaty is hosting the second day of negotiations between Iran and the P5+1 (E3+3) group of nations facilitating the international efforts aimed at settling the nuclear problem of Iran.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov leading the Russian delegation at the talks told journalists on Tuesday that the first day of the talks was productive. "Today's meeting was useful. During the day, there have been useful contacts, and this work will be continued tomorrow," Ryabkov said.

Michael Mann, the chief spokesperson for EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton, said in commenting on the outcomes of the first day of the talks that it dealt exclusively with a new package of P5+1's proposals to Iran.

Mann said P5+1 expected Tehran to positively take its proposals. "I cannot make predictions. However, we hope that Iran will come back and show flexibility and respond positively to our proposals," Mann said at a news conference in Almaty on Tuesday.

The Iranian delegation also has some proposals to make in Almaty. "As well as P5+1, we have come here with proposals based on the decisions made at the Moscow round [on June 18-19, 2012]," a source from the Iranian delegation told Interfax on Tuesday.
