Russia offers to help S. Africa create nuclear industry

MOSCOW. March 1 (Interfax) - Russia has offered to help South Africa pull off its plan to create a civilian nuclear industry.

"The South African nuclear power program deserves respect and Russia would be able to help carry it out," the head of Russian state corporation Rosatom, Sergei Kiriyenko, told reporters.

"The South African program has aroused interest" in Russia, he said. "That program involves the construction of eight generating units with a combined capacity of 9.6 megawatts, though it hasn't taken off yet, and this has to do with supplies of nuclear fuel."

"Moreover, we cooperate with South Africa in nuclear medicine, personnel training and so on," Kiriyenko said.
