Georgia reduces military service to one year

TBILISI. March 1 (Interfax) - Compulsory military service in Georgia has been reduced from 15 months to one year.

The reduction is a first step in the transition to a professional army, Georgian Defense Minister Irakly Alasania told reporters on Friday.

Alasania said that another change has been introduced as well, in particular, those, who have already applied to participate in the unified national exams, will get a delay until the exam results come, Alasania said.

Alasania has said that Georgia would switch gradually to a professional army.
