Estonia to pull out from Afghanistan in spring 2014

TALLINN. March 1 (Interfax) - Estonia will send two more units to Afghanistan under a rotation schedule before pulling out, Estonian Defense Minister Urmas Reinsalu told a Friday press briefing in Tallinn.

"Estonian authorities and NATO allies have decided to send two more six-month missions of Estcoy-16 and Estcoy-17 units to Afghanistan. The last mission will begin in November 2013 and end in April-May 2014," he said.

"After that as much military property as possible will be withdrawn from Afghanistan and the rest will be destroyed," Defense Forces Commander Maj. Gen. Riho Terras said.

Staff officers of the Defense Forces, a special-purpose unit and a logistic team will stay in Afghanistan to supervise the property withdrawal.

The reporters were also told that Estonia would donate $500,000 to Afghanistan in state assistance.

Up to 170 Estonian servicemen are on mission in Afghanistan at present.
