Unilateral sanctions hinder talks on Iran's nuclear program - Churkin

NEW YORK. March 7 (Interfax) - The introduction of unilateral sanctions against Iran by some countries is creating obstacles to solving the Iranian nuclear problem, Russian ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin said on Wednesday.

"We are convinced that the collective efforts of the world community to resolve questions related to the Iranian nuclear program are undermined by unilateral sanctions. In a number of cases they have extraterritorial nature which is categorically unacceptable from the viewpoint of international law," he said at a UN Security Council session that discussed the Iranian nuclear dossier.

"Russia consistently advocates a political, diplomatic settlement of the situation involving the Iranian nuclear program and sees no alternative to a negotiated solution," the diplomat said.

Russia hopes for the success of further talks of Iran with IAEA and P5+1 group (permanent UN Security Council countries and Germany).

"We hope that the new meetings in the next few weeks in the framework of the talks between P5+1 and Iran will prove fruitful and allow for bringing the positions of the sides closer to each other," Churkin added.
