Embassy confirms detention of Russian citizen Kabalov in Belarus

MINSK. March 11 (Interfax) - Russia's Embassy in Belarus has been informed about the detention of Russian citizen Sergei Kabalov in Grodno.

"Reports received from the Russian Consulate General in Brest confirm that citizen of the Russian Federation Kabalov was detained by the Belarusian Border Guard Service in Grodno," embassy advisor Vladimir Marchukov told Interfax on Friday.

"Details of the man's detention have not been disclosed. The only thing we know is that Belarusian border guards acted in accordance with the Russian Interior Ministry's request," he said.

Border guards have already turned Kabalov over to Belarusian police, Marchukov said.

"The senior consul of the Russian Consulate General in Brest is keeping in touch with Belarusian law enforcement agencies," he said.

Russian police earlier provided Belarusian law enforcement services with documents proving that Kabalov was wanted by the Russian authorities on suspicion of making an attempt to hijack an airplane bound for Egypt, a Russian Interior Ministry spokesman told Interfax.

"The Russian Interior Ministry's Transport Department for the Central Federal District prepared all the necessary documents proving that Mr. Kabalov was wanted by the Russian authorities in order to enable the Belarusian side to begin compiling the documents needed for his extradition," he said.

An Interior Ministry representative reported earlier that Kabalov had been detained in Belarus.

A compliant was filed by Kogalymavia Airways with police at Domodedovo Airport on January 12 that a drunken passenger on a flight from Moscow to Hurghada had punched a flight attendant and used obscene language.
