Georgia should be thinking of joining CSTO - ex-Security Minister Khaburdzania

TBILISI. March 11 (Interfax) - Former Georgian State Security Minister Valery Khaburdzania has said that Georgia's accession to NATO is quite uncertain.

"We must support Russia so that it can exercise control over the whole Caucasus. As for Georgia's possible accession to the military-political Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), one could think of that, though in the context of the present-day situation it is difficult to speak of that but we are not in a hurry and we have time," he said at a Monday press conference.

He confirmed that he had come to Tbilisi from Moscow to set up a pro-Russian political party that will take part in the next election.

"Presently 15%-20% of voters support a pro-Russian course of Georgia and with time the figures can grow," he said.

He said that today there are political forces in Georgia with which he could cooperate, such as former Parliament Speaker Nino Burjanadze, former Prime Minister Zurab Nogaideli and leader of the Free Georgia party Kakha Kukava.

"It will be difficult for Georgia to resolve many acute issues without normalizing relations and rapprochement with Russia," he said.
