Representatives of political elite are leaving Georgia - Merabishvili

TBILISI. March 11 (Interfax) - Zurab Adeishvili, former justice minister of Georgia, who is on an international wanted persons list, said he has no intention of returning to Georgia in the next few months, former Prime Minister Vano Merabishvili told a briefing on Monday.

Georgian prosecutors charged Adeishvili with abuse of power, organization of humiliating and inhumane treatment of inmates, falsification of a criminal case and provocation of a crime.

Adeishvili and his family left Georgia immediately after the parliamentary elections in October 2012.

"He will return to Georgia, but not in the next few months because very many good and respected people now have to leave Georgia, which is a big tragedy to the country," Merabishvili said.

Merabishvili said he often talks with Adeishvili by phone and their conversations are recorded by the special services, adding that he believes "representatives of the political elite have been leaving Georgia since the arrival of the new administration.

Last week, a group of European Parliament deputies issued an address to the current Georgian authorities, in which they sharply criticized the political persecution of representatives of the former authorities, he said.

"This is the reason why our United National Movement party plans to hold a rally in support of Georgia's western policies and a halt of political repression in central Tbilisi on April 19. We expect many people to come to our rally to convince the current authorities that there are people who care about the future of Georgia," Merabishvili said.
