Flight safety oversight must be tightened in Congo - Russian senator

MOSCOW. March 11 (Interfax) - The Kremlin envoy for Africa Mikhail Margelov said the Congolese government must tighten control over flight safety.

"Russian and Congolese investigators must do all they can to track down the causes and circumstances of the tragedy," he told Interfax on Monday.

UTair Airlines' Mil Mi-8 helicopter went missing in the Republic of the Congo on March 9. The wreckage was later discovered in the jungle. The four-member Russian crew was killed in the accident.

The Mi-8 disaster "was one more grim reminder" of how important it is for the Congo to perfect flight safety regulations, Margelov said.

"I think the Congolese government must be asked to tighten control over this sphere and save Russia and other countries from accidents and casualties," he said.
