CHISINAU. April 24 (Interfax) - Moldovan President Nicolae Timofti appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Iurie Leanca acting prime minister on Tuesday evening.
Leanca told journalists following a meeting with the president that his appointment will take effect on April 25.
"I have no choice in this situation, this is the president's decision. I wanted something different. I wanted a new Cabinet of ministers to be formed on April 25, which would start addressing problems the country is facing," Leanca said.
Asked by journalists whether he will be a candidate for prime minister, Leanca suggested that it was too early to talk about this.
"I would prefer to deal with what I can do better, I mean international relations," he said.
The Moldovan Constitutional Court ruled late on Monday that Vlad Filat could not perform his duties as prime minister and form a new government. The court explained in motivating its ruling that "a prime minister dismissed following a vote of no-confidence and accusations of corruption cannot remain acting prime minister."
