MOSCOW. June 5 (Interfax) - Moscow is investigating whether bombardments near the Russian Embassy in Damascus might have targeted Russians, Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said.
"It is being found out whether the bombardments were deliberate acts of militants against Russian citizens and interests in Syria, for instance, in the context of yesterday's appeal of the head of the so-called "Supreme Military Council" of the opposition, Salim Idris, which criticized Russia and threatened to make the Syrian conflict transboundary," says a commentary by Lukashevich published on the ministry website on Wednesday.
The Damascus Al Adawi neighborhood, the location of the Russian Embassy in Syria, was put under mortar fire after noon on June 4, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
"Five shells were fired. They killed a pedestrian and injured a Syrian serviceman guarding the embassy. None of the Russian citizens was hurt. The Embassy is operating normally," Lukashevich said.
A mortar bombardment of the western villa quarter, the location of the residence of the Russian ambassador, happened in the evening of June 3. Several local residents were hurt.
