MOSCOW. July 22 (Interfax) - The United States ignores Russia's requests to extradite a leader of a North Caucasus armed gang Ilyas Akhmadov for ten years, the Russian Prosecutor General's Office said.
"We have sought his extradition for over ten years. This person jointly with Basayev and Khattab created a number of sabotage and terrorist camps where militants were trained. As a result of their activities, over 2,000 people entered Dagestan and over 100 servicemen and civilians were killed and over 300 people were injured in armed clashes," acting extradition department head of the Russian Prosecutor General's Office, Sergei Gorlenko, told Interfax on Monday.
"Basayev and Khattab were killed a long time ago and Akhmadov made it to the Foreign Minister's position of the so-called republic of Ichkeria and is still living carefree in the United States," the official said.
Russia has repeatedly requested that Akhmadov be extradited but the U.S. authorities refuse to extradite him, Gorlenko said.
