MOSCOW. Aug 14 (Interfax) - Boycotting the Sochi Olympics is pointless and would harm sports, Alexander Zhukov, president of the Russian Olympic Committee, said.
"Boycotting the Olympics is a completely pointless action, which will harm athletes," Zhukov told reporters in Moscow on Wednesday.
There will be no racial or sexual discrimination at the Sochi Olympics and all explanations of the enforcement of the law banning the propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations among children, that was adopted in Russia have already been given, he said.
"The Russian government and the Olympic Committee have already given all explanations on this matter. I think they are exhaustive," Zhukov said.
"There will be no racial or sexual discrimination at the Sochi Olympics. We can guarantee that. It is fully in line with what is stated in the Olympic Charter," Zhukov said.
When asked whether the appearance of athletes carrying LGBT movement flags at the Olympics will be regarded as propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations among children, Zhukov said: "I don't want to go into the detail about these explanations. All official explanations have already been given."
The Olympics have not been boycotted since the 1980s, although such calls for boycotts were made before the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Zhukov said.
"Athletes and Olympic committees have a great desire to compete and not confuse sports with politics, I am therefore really hoping that there will be no boycotting of the Sochi Olympics," Zhukov said.
