MOSCOW. Aug 26 (Interfax) - The Russian Foreign Ministry condemns the recent terrorist attacks in Lebanon and warns about the danger of inter-religious conflicts in the region.
"Moscow unconditionally condemns this inhuman act whose perpetrators must receive a deserved punishment. The deaths of innocent people and attacks on mosques and believers cannot be justified," Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said in a statement available on the ministry website on Saturday.
"We deem it necessary to prevent terrorists' attempts to fuel an extremely dangerous inter-religious conflict in Lebanon, as well as in Syria and other countries of the region, as it is capable of leading to most negative consequences for the Middle East's security and stability," Lukashevich said.
Two major bomb attacks were committed in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli, which is populated mostly by Sunni Muslims, on August 23. The first bomb went off on a square near the al-Taqwa mosque following a Friday prayer, and the other blast struck the al-Salam mosque in the Mina area. Lebanese media said the blasts killed at least 37 people and injured about 400 others.
"We express our deep condolences to the families of those killed and wish all those injured to recover as soon as possible. We once again declare our full solidarity with the country's leadership and the people of Lebanon in their firm opposition to all terrorist manifestations," Lukashevich said.
