MOSCOW. Sept 16 (Interfax-AVN) - The fire on the nuclear submarine Tomsk, which caught fire while undergoing maintenance, has been fully extinguished, Alexei Kravchenko, press officer for the United Shipbuilding Corporation (OSK), told Interfax-AVN on Monday.
"The fire has been extinguished. They continue pumping foam to prevent a new fire," Kravchenko said.
No one was hurt while the fire was being extinguished, he said. "Several firefighters who inhaled smoke were given permission to return home after receiving medical assistance," he said.
An investigation into the accident and an evaluation of the damage will begin in the near future, he said.
According to earlier reports, welding work caused smoke to build up between the compartments of the nuclear submarine Tomsk, which was at the dock of the plant Zvezda (Bolshoi Kamen, Primorye), alerting workers to the fire on Monday morning. Fifteen firefighter brigades arrived at the scene. Foam was used to extinguish the flames.
There is no threat to the population or to the staff of the plant. All weapons were previously removed from the submarine and its reactor was shut down.
