Lavrov: we are hoping to approve UN Security Council resolution on Syria without going beyond Geneva agreements (Part 2)

NEW YORK (UN). Sept 25 (Interfax) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that he is hoping that the UN Security Council resolution on Syria can be approved without going beyond the agreements reached concerning the destruction of Syrian chemical weapons in Geneva in September.

"We are hoping that we can approve the UN Security Council resolution, which will be adopted immediately after members of the Executive Council of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) vote on their decision in The Hague, without going beyond the framework that was drawn up earlier in Geneva," he told reporters after meeting with his U.S. counterpart, Secretary of State John Kerry.

Lavrov reiterated that "the OPCW plays the main role in such issues."

Responding to a question as to whether the United States was insisting on the adoption of the UN Security Council resolution on Chapter 7 of the UN Charter envisioning the use of force, Lavrov: "We are working within the framework approved in Geneva."

Responding to a question as to when a draft resolution could be approved, the minister said: "We will continue this work over the next few days."
