Lavrov hopes decisions of OPCW, UN SC on Syrian chemical weapons be effective

NEW YORK. Sept 30 (Interfax) - Moscow says the Executive Council of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and the UN Security Council should contribute to creating conditions for the destruction of chemical weapons in Syria.

"We expect that the decisions of the OPCW and the UN Security Council will contribute to creating necessary frames for the destruction of chemical arsenals in Syria," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said when speaking at the 68th UN General Assembly meeting on Friday.

The Russian-U.S. agreements on the Syrian chemical weapons were possible to achieve thanks to the decision of Damascus to join the Chemical Weapons Convention and to implement relevant obligations quickly, Lavrov said.

The progress in Syria's chemical disarmament is aimed at giving impetus to the implementation of existing agreements on calling the conference on creating zone free of weapons of mass destruction and means of its delivery in Middle East, the minister said.

"A number of difficult issues, related to ensuring that all countries of the region participate in the conference, exist but it is impossible to refer to them forever," Lavrov said.
