MOSCOW. Sept 30 (Interfax) - The United States, which had accused Russia of placing itself on the "wrong side of history" in the Syrian conflict, realized that its "right" side could have had negative consequences and changed its stance, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.
"If those who have been objectively monitoring the events try to assess what has just happened in the Syrian crisis, they might conclude that we have placed ourselves on the "right side of history". Although our partners who accused us of being on the wrong side have had certain twists and turns," the Russian minister said in an interview published by Kommersant on Monday.
"In the end, the Americans must have realized where they would end up trying to put themselves on what seemed to be "the right side of history"," the minister said.
"It is natural for a man, a politician or a diplomat, those who are settling conflicts, to use this trial and error method," Lavrov observed.
"Most importantly, we arrived at the absolutely correct side of history and achieved the full international consensus about the scheme we had developed and the OPCW and the UN Security Council approved it and which, in fact, became a part of the policy of Syria - a new member of the Chemical Weapons Convention," he said.
The Hague vote on the resolution concerning the role of the OPCW in the disposal of Syrian chemical weapons added another provision, which urged all countries which had not joined the Chemical Weapons Convention to do so, he said.
"I will tell you a little secret: this provision was suggested by Iran and supported by the United States. Iran had twice fallen victim of chemical weapons in the previous century. I think it suggested an absolutely correct addition," Lavrov said.
