Georgian Interior Ministry declines denying entry to Russian deputy

TBILISI. Sept 30 (Interfax) - The Georgian Interior Ministry has not confirmed the information that Russian State Duma deputy, part of the Parliament Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) delegation to monitor elections in Georgia, Vasily Likhachyov, had been denied entry.

"We do not confirm this information, it is therefore incorrect," the Georgian Interior Ministry told reporters on Monday.

The Georgian Foreign Ministry has not commented on the issue so far.

Meanwhile, head of the Russian Federal Assembly in the PACE, head of the State Duma committee on international affairs Alexei Pushkov told reporters that the PACE could use sanctions against Georgia due to the ban of entry issued against deputy Likhachyov to Georgia in line with the Council of Europe.

Likhachyov has been denied entry to Georgia due to the fact that he had previously travelled to Abkhazia and South Ossetia, travel to Abkhazia and South Ossetia automatically leads to a ban from entering Georgia, according to Georgian law.
