Russia may continue modernization of Peruvian MiG-29 fighters

MOSCOW. Nov 5 (Interfax-AVN) - The Russian Aircraft Corporation MiG hopes to sign a new contract on the modernization of MiG-29 fighter jets of the Peruvian Air Force.

"We already have a contract with Peru in place and MiG-29 fighters are being modernized. There is an agreement to sign a new contract and modernize an additional batch of these aircraft," MiG General Director Sergei Korotkov told Interfax-AVN.

He did not say how many MiG-29 fighters might be modernized under the new contract. "They have a rather large number of such planes," Korotkov said.

Peruvian laws have been adjusted recently, he said. There are a number of new requirements to offset deals and others, "and we are trying to meet these requirements so that we can continue to modernize the aircraft under a contract we are expecting to sign shortly," Korotkov said.

Documents were drawn up in the beginning of this year but the signing was somewhat delayed due to the adjusted laws, he noted.

Korotkov also said that the MiG Corporation had very close contacts with Slovakia. "We have a maintenance subscription contract. We are cooperating within its framework. But requirements are changing. New requirements are being made, and the client has new demands. We have just signed a 5.5 million euro contract to upgrade the software and locator bulletins," Korotkov continued.

Negotiations with Poland are underway, he said. "We are doing work specified by the contracts that were signed earlier," Korotkov said.
