Russian deputy PM raps Moldova for bypassing Transdniestria in planning deal with EU

BRUSSELS. Nov 14 (Interfax) - Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin has attacked Moldova for not consulting its breakaway Transdniestria region in deciding to seek an association agreement with the European Union and warned that the proposed pact would spell the definitive split of Moldova.

"It's with a flimsy piece of thread that the Moldovan locomotive is towing that car - I mean Transdniestria - as it is, and there's a serious probability that at such sharp turns it'll get uncoupled completely," Rogozin, who is the Russian president's special representative for Transdniestria, told reporters.

Russia as security guarantor in Transdniestria and a country with "military presence in Transdniestria, albeit limited, and peacekeepers along the demarcation line, cannot avoid being straightforward about this," he said.

Transdniestria has no intention to join any alliances, Rogozin said.

"If there is no negotiation process with them today, if they are not asked, - and it's a region where 500,000 people live of whom 200,000 are Russian citizens and 70,000 Ukrainian citizens, - the entire blame for the collapse of Moldovan statehood will primarily have to be borne by the politicians in Chisinau who have made this decision without looking back," he said.
