Egyptian foreign minister expects stronger cooperation with Russia in various sectors

CAIRO. Nov 14 (Interfax) - Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy expects Cairo to continue cooperation with Moscow in various sectors.

"We expect our interaction to broaden in many sectors, because Russia plays an important role on the international arena. We expect our relations to be strong, continuous, and stable," Fahmi said following a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

"We seek to step up the relationship that already exists. Russia has too much clout to replace," the minister said when asked whether Moscow could become Egypt's key ally instead of the United States.

It was reported earlier that the U.S. authorities had partially suspended military aid to Egypt following the overthrow of President Mohamed Morsi's and ensuing riots.

David Carle, a spokesman for U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy, suggested earlier that Washington was reconsidering its aid to Egypt, although he made it clear that the matter was not about the absolute suspension of financing.
