Russia unhappy with U.S., Canadian, Ukrainian stance on UN anti-Nazism resolution

MOSCOW. Nov 25 (Interfax) - Moscow said it regretted that the Unites States and Canada voted against and Ukraine abstained on the resolution against glorification of Nazism proposed by Russia to the UN General Assembly.

"The fact that the U.S., Canada and Palau voted against this document, while the delegation of the EU member-states abstained from voting on the resolution draft supported by the majority of the UN member-states is very puzzling and regrettable," the Russian Foreign Ministry posted a statement on its website on Friday.

"The stance of Ukraine, which again preferred to abstain from condemning the glorification of the Nazism and from honoring the memory of those who died fighting this evil, deserves regret as well," the document said.

On November 21 the resolution on fighting against the glorification of the Nazism and other practices contributing to the escalation of contemporary types of racism, race discrimination, xenophobia and intolerance related to them was passed at the third committee meeting of the 68th UN General Assembly in New York on Russia's initiative, the statement said. "Forty six countries were co-authors of our draft. And 126 states voted for the resolution, three delegations (the U.S., Canada and Palau) were opposed and 50 countries abstained from voting," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
