Putin to hold six meetings on defense sector in three days

MOSCOW. Nov 28 (Interfax) - Russian President Vladimir Putin will hold a number of meetings for the first time dedicated to all the defense and military industry sectors in the framework of the plans to modernize and re-equip the armed forces, Putin's press secretary Dmitry Peskov said.

"Vladimir Vladimirovich has chosen such a format of detailed submersion and content depth for the first time. Two meetings a day will be held in the coming three days," Peskov told reporters.

The first meeting in the series is currently being held at Putin's residence in Sochi and is dedicated to the re-equipment of strategic purpose missile troops, Peskov said.

The next meeting to be held on Wednesday is related to high-precision weapons of the fleet, in particular tactical missiles, and fleet commander and chief engineers will participate in it.

Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev will participate in all the meetings, Peskov said. "The results of this process will be summarized on Friday evening after the second day of meetings," the spokesman said.

The re-equipment program started to form in the crisis years of 2008-2009 when Putin was a prime minister, Peskov said.

"It concerns any country, especially such a state as Russia, which carries the responsibility and plays one of the main roles in the process of ensuring mutual control as well as ensuring global strategic safety, should keep its armed forces at the modern level," Peskov said.

The sum of 23 trillion rubles [allocated for the modernization of the army and fleet in the long term] could be cut or the spending timeline could be changed, Peskov said.

"The corrections are possible but this process is not doubted," Peskov said.
