Militants' accomplice killed in return fire after throwing grenade at police in Kabardino-Balkaria

STAVROPOL. Dec 17 (Interfax) - None of the officers was killed or injured when an unknown man threw a grenade in the direction of security forces engaged in an operation to detain a man accused of helping a militant group in the Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria in Russia's North Caucasus, a spokesman for the Russian Interior Ministry's regional branch told Interfax on Monday.

"After a Niva car presumably carrying an accomplice of a gang was surrounded [by police] between the villages of Chegem and Yanikoi in Kabardino-Balkaria, an unknown person sitting inside it threw a grenade in the direction of security forces. None of the policemen was killed or injured. They returned fire," he said.

As a result, the car exploded and is still burning, the spokesman said.

"We believe that the attacker has been eliminated," he added.
