Criminal case opened over Moscow car accident that killed Dagestani vice-premier

MOSCOW. Dec 20 (Interfax) - Moscow police have opened a criminal case over the car accident that killed Dagestani vice-premier Gaji Makhachev.

"A detective of the Moscow western administrative district police has opened a criminal case over the car accident on Kutuzovsky Avenue, which killed three and injured five persons," a Moscow city police department spokesman told Interfax on Friday.

A Mercedes GL moving along Kutuzovsky Avenue towards the suburbs hit concrete blocks separating traffic lanes near 33, Kutuzovsky Avenue, rolled onto the opposite lane and collided with a Chery, a Chevrolet and a Mini Cooper last night.

The crash killed three people and injured five, including three children. Makhachev, who was reportedly at the Mercedes' wheel, is one of the victims. His wife and three children were taken to a hospital.

The Chevrolet Express van caught fire and burned down. A charred body was found inside and charred remains, presumably those of a Chevrolet passenger, were found near the car.

Rescuers retrieved Makhachev and the other crash victims from the damaged Mercedes but the official died on the ambulance.
