Russian state websites under "tens of thousands" of hacking attacks a day - official

MOSCOW. Dec 27 (Interfax) - Russian governmental and parliamentary websites come under "tens of thousands" of hacking attacks every day, and so the government takes action to fend them off, said the secretary of Russia's Security Council.

"According to the FSB [Federal Security Service], facilities of the information structure of the president of the Russian Federation, the government, the State Duma and the Federation Council daily come under tens of thousands of computer attacks," Nikolai Patrushev said in an interview with Russian government daily Rossiyskaya Gazeta a transcript of which is due to appear in Friday's issue of the paper.

"This use of information technology may destabilize the economy, undermine sovereignty and the foundations of the state system, and disrupt the life support systems. It is a direct threat to national security," he said.

"We can see these threats and are carrying out measures to offset them. Primarily via strategic planning documents, including the Principal Guidelines for State Policy on the Security of Automated Systems for the Management of Manufacturing and Technological Processes at the Critical Infrastructural Facilities of Russia," Patrushev said.

He said the president had ordered the FSB to set up a system to detect and prevent computer attacks on state Internet resources and make good damage done in such attacks.

"This will make it possible to ensure interaction between all structures concerned, including our foreign partners, in detecting and preventing computer attacks and eliminating damage done by them," Patrushev said.
