Last name of Volgograd bomber disclosed

MOSCOW. Dec 30 (Interfax) - The suspected suicide attacker who carried out Sunday's bombing at a train station in Volgograd has been identified, a law enforcement source told Interfax, saying his last name was Pavlov but giving no other details.

Earlier, a source in criminal investigation services told Interfax that the suspected suicide bomber was a man of Slav appearance who had brought a bomb to the station inside a rucksack.

The source said an unexploded hand grenade and pistol had been found on the bombing site and were believed to have belonged to the suspected attacker.

"According to preliminary information, the terrorist was stopped by police officers when he was passing through a metal detector - the alarm went off. A policeman took the man aside and asked to see his belongings. At that moment the explosive device went off," the source said.

He added that a young woman was passing by during the blast. She was killed and her remains led detectives to suspect that she had been the bomber.

A scrutiny of CCTV footage clarified all this, the source said.

The latest update put the number of those killed in the attack at 17, including the suspected bomber, and the number of those injured at about 45.
