Saakashvili's arrest will hurt Georgia's international position - parliamentarian

TBILISI. Jan 15 (Interfax) - The arrest of Georgian ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili will be met with a negative reaction from the international community, one of the parliamentary majority leaders Levan Berdzenishvili said.

"Our authorities and communities must decide what is more important - Georgia or Saakashvili. If we decide that Saakashvili is more important, we must arrest him but also be prepared to meet with a negative international response to the arrest," the parliamentarian said in an interview with the Georgian newspaper All News, published on Wednesday.

"Regrettably, today Saakashavili's rating is higher than Georgia's," the parliamentarian said.

In case of a criminal case launched against Saakashvili, "he is certain to be found guilty," he said.

"However, should Georgia imprison Saakashvili? In my view, this problem can be solved: he should not be locked up, but nor should he be called a hero," Berdzenishvili said.
