15 Moscow region residents detained for smuggling arms from Baltic countries

MOSCOW. Jan 17 (Interfax) - The Moscow region police have detained 15 members of an organized group smuggling arms and ammunition from Baltic republics.

"The Main Criminal Investigation Department of the Russian Interior Ministry jointly with colleagues from the Russian Federal Security Service and the Special Purpose Center of the Federal Security Service have detained an organized group suspected of smuggling armaments and ammunition," says a report posted on the Russian Interior Ministry's website on Friday.

The police detained 15 suspects, "residents of the Moscow region aged from 29 to 60," it said.

"There is information that the group members smuggled firearms from Baltic countries into Russia by car and sold them in the Moscow region," the report said.

More than 90 firearms were seized from the group members.

A criminal case was opened under Article 222 (illegal arms turnover), Article 223 (illegal arms production) and Article 226.1 (arms contraband) of the Russian Criminal Code.
