Shoigu: Russia has to deter new security threats, challenges

MOSCOW. Jan 21 (Interfax-AVN) - New challenges and threats to Russia's military security have emerged in recent years, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said at a Ministry Board meeting on Tuesday.

He mentioned "the deployment of a global missile defense network and its components near the Russian borders, the development of new efficient types of conventional high-precision weapons and the militarization of outer space."

"Hence, we have to take counter measures," the minister remarked.

"The Russian president has set the task of the provision of national defense under new circumstances: the further strengthening of our nuclear triad, the formation of a global intelligence network, including its space cluster, and the development of general purpose forces - the Air Force, the Navy and the ground troops," Shoigu said.
