Moscow concerned about weakening Free Syrian Army

MOSCOW. Jan 21 (Interfax) - Russia is concerned about the weakening of the Free Syrian Army, which helps in the joint fight against terrorism in the region, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

"The Free Syrian Army has weakened rather seriously. And this is our concern because, actually, such structures as the Islamic Front, Jabhat al-Nusra and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant are fighting terrorism to an extent, but they are not fighting terrorism as a phenomenon, they are fighting each other and seeking to gain positions on the territory of Syria," Lavrov said at a press conference in Moscow on Tuesday.

Lavrov recalled that British Prime Minister David Cameron proposed at a meeting of the G8, in which the UK was presiding at the moment, to include in the meeting communique the appeal to the Syrian government and opposition for pooling their efforts and eradicating terrorism in Syria.

"Everyone supported that appeal. We are confident that is now topical as never before," Lavrov said.
