Russian police chief wants ties broadened with Israel in fighting terrorism

JERUSALEM. Jan 22 (Interfax) - Russian Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev and Israeli Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch have signed a protocol on cooperation between the Russian and Israeli law enforcement services.

"Our cooperation has been expanding at a steady pace. We have intensified inter-agency contacts in various areas and we want to attain concrete results," Kolokoltsev told his Israeli counterpart.

"The framework of cooperation should be expanded," he said. "The present-day challenges to national security require appropriate action. We are interested in cooperating in the fight against extremism, terrorism and cybercrime," Kolokoltsev said. He also said that "in conditions of global threat, Russia attaches great importance to consolidated efforts in cutting international channels of financing the terrorists," he said.

Kolokoltsev also said that the Russian Interior Ministry hopes to broaden cooperation with its Israeli collogues in curbing the spread of radical ideas, and in localizing and neutralizing international extremist and terrorist organizations.

Kolokoltsev is in Israel on a three-day working visit. It is the first visit to Israel to be paid by a Russian interior minister over the past 13 years.
