U.S., Russia discuss Afghanistan, Syria, missile defense

BRUSSELS. Jan 22 (Interfax) - Russia's Armed Forces Chief of the General Staff and First Deputy Defense Minister Valery Gerasimov and United States Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Martin Dempsey have discussed the situation in Afghanistan and Syria, missile defense issues and other problems concerning global security.

The dialogue between the military chiefs was held at a session of the U.S.-Russian Military Cooperation Working Group on Tuesday.

"In our view, the Russian-U.S. military cooperation has been positive," Gerasimov said at the session.

For his part Dempsey suggested that they discuss how to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the 1945 meeting of the Allied troops on Elba in 2015.

At the end of the session the two sides signed a memorandum approving a working plan for the U.S.-Russian bilateral military cooperation in 2014.
