Syrian Kurds send signal that current delegation to peace talks does not represent entire opposition - Russian minister

MONTREUX. Jan 23 (Interfax) - The declaration of Kurds' autonomy in Syria serves as a warning against attempts to claim that the National Coalition's delegation to the peace talks in Switzerland is able to adopt decisions on behalf of all of Syria's opposition forces, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

"I have read reports that a Kurdish autonomy was proclaimed in the district of Kamishli. At the same time, there were no statements that Kurds are going to cease to be a part of Syria," Lavrov told reporters after an international conference on Syria in Montreux.

"It is a serious signal to all of us. It tells us that we should not try to look for simplified approaches or create the impression that the current delegation of the Syrian opposition is allegedly able to resolve all the issues on behalf of the entire opposition," he said.

"There is a need to involve Kurds in this negotiating process. It is a part of our position," the Russian minister said.
