MOSCOW. Jan 29 (Interfax) - The Sudanese authorities will conduct a thorough investigation into an attack on the Russian consul to this country, Sudanese Ambassador to Russia Omar Dahab Mohamed said.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister and presidential envoy for the Middle East Mikhail Bogdanov received the Sudanese ambassador in Moscow at the latter's request on Wednesday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
"The ambassador of Sudan expressed his regret about the attack Tuesday by an unidentified person on head of the Russian Consulate in Khartoum Andrei Taramayev and his wife. He reiterated that the Sudanese authorities will conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and take all the necessary measures to provide reliable security of the Russian Embassy and its personnel," it said.
The two diplomats "exchanged opinions on the situation in Sudan and in northeastern Africa on the whole, including in the context of the internal political crisis in South Sudan. They also touched upon a number of other regional problems of mutual interest. They also discussed some practical aspects of continued development of Russian-Sudanese bilateral relations," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
Russian Charge d'Affaires to Sudan Yury Vidakas had said earlier on the news TV channel Rossiya-24 that the head of the Russian Consulate Office in Khartoum and his wife had already been at home.
"The diplomat was attacked when he was walking out of the embassy. An unidentified person actually attacked him and his wife in the parking lot. It turned out later that this man comes from the Central African Republic," Vidakas said.
The diplomat and his wife were immediately provided with qualified medical aid and were sent to the hospital, he said.
The local criminal police have opened an investigation into the incident, and the Russian Embassy stepped up security measures, Vidakas said.
