Measure of restraint imposed on 2 students after attack on police in Kherson

KYIV. Jan 31 (Interfax) - A court in the Ukrainian city of Kherson has imposed a measure of restraint on two persons accused of attacking police officers, one of whom subsequently died from his injuries in the hospital, on January 27.

One of the suspects was remanded into custody for 60 days, while the second person was placed under house arrest.

"A 23-year-old student was remanded into custody for 60 days. He will be placed in a pre-trial detention center. The second suspect has been placed under house arrest," a Kherson region police spokesman said on Thursday.

The investigation continues.

Late on January 27, protesters stabbed three policemen with knives in Kherson, fatally injuring one of them.

The suspected attackers, who were identified as students of a Kherson university, were detained.

"It turned out that all of the detained people were radical participants in the protests," the spokesman said.

A criminal investigation was opened on the counts of attempted murder (Part 2 of Article 15 of Ukraine's Penal Code) and premeditated murder (Part 2 of Article 115), an offence that carries from 15 years in prison to a life sentence.
