Drug mule killed on Tajik-Afghan border

DUSHANBE. Feb 5 (Interfax) - Tajik border guards killed a drug mule from Afghanistan in a Tajik-Afghan border shootout and seized 53 kilograms of marijuana, the public relations center of the Tajik State Committee for National Security said on Wednesday.

It did not say where exactly the exchange of gunfire had occurred.

"A group of smugglers attempting an illegal crossing of the state border ignored the demands of border guards and security service officers to stop and opened fire," the report said.

"One Afghan smuggler was killed in the shootout and his accomplice dumped their cargo and escaped into the neighboring territory," the center said.

Bags of marijuana with the total weight of 53 kilograms were found on the scene.
