Russian Foreign Ministry concerned about attempts to disrupt humanitarian operations in Homs

MOSCOW. Feb 10 (Interfax) - The violations by militants of the ceasefire reached between the Syrian government and opposition in the Syrian city of Homs create unfavorable background for holding the second round of the Geneva II international conference on Syria, which began on Monday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said.

"We express regret that cases of violating the ceasefire regime by militants - as a result of which at least five people died and 20 were injured - occurred while holding a humanitarian operation," Lukashevich was quoted as saying in a statement posted on the ministry's website.

"We consider such actions as an attempt to disrupt this humanitarian event and to create unfavorable background around the second round of the direct inter-Syrian talks, which began in Geneva on February 10," Lukashevich said.

At the same time, it is satisfying that as of February 10 over 600 people, including 210 women and 180 children, managed to leave the old town district blocked in Homs in the framework of the agreement to stop battle actions between the governmental army and armed opposition, the spokesman said.

"Employees of the Syrian Red Crescent have also managed to deliver food to the blocked district. A total of 250 ready-to-eat meals and same number of flour packs have been delivered to the enclave. Measures are being taken to move Christians and to evacuate those willing," Lukashevich said.

The resolution of humanitarian issues in Syria should be carried out at a comprehensive basis lacking political angle and in accordance with the international humanitarian legal standards and provisions of the statement of the UN Security Council chairperson of October 2, 2013, Lukashevich said.
