Russian Army to have ten scientific companies by late 2014 - Pankov

MOSCOW. Feb 10 (Interfax-AVN) - Six new scientific companies will have been formed in the Russian Armed Forces by the end of 2014, the Russian Defense Ministry has reported.

The Russian Armed forces already have four scientific companies.

"The number of scientific companies will reach ten before the end of this year," Russian Deputy Defense Minister Nikolai Pankov said while meeting with university students in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

The Defense Ministry made the right decision to create scientific companies, Pankov was quoted as saying by the Defense Ministry's press service.

"The formation of scientific companies will continue," he said.

One of the new scientific companies will be formed in the spring and will have a medical specialization, he said. It is also planned to create a scientific company specializing in the humanities, he said.

Speaking about the prospects of creation of scientific companies, Pankov addressed the formation and functioning of sports companies. Specifically, he said that dozens of young people form sports companies joined the Russian national Olympic team and none represent Russia in Sochi.

The meeting also addressed issues relating to the military training of university students. Pankov said the new military training system will be put in place in September 2015. "Students who have expressed a desire to undergo military training as an alternative to service by conscription will have 450 hours of theoretical training and will also have three-month reserve duty training. They will receive reserve soldier or sergeant military documents," he said.

The first stage of the introduction of a new form of military training, the development of the legislation and training in the existing military departments of universities, will begin in 2014.

Pankov also said the limited number of military departments in universities (72 universities have military departments) is now preventing an overwhelming majority of students (over 60,000 people) from undergoing military training during their study periods and they are called up for military service after they graduate.

"The new form for military training will allow students to undergo military training in any educational establishment that has a military department, in a military unit, or in the Defense Ministry's training center. To organize the process, the Defense Ministry will provide testing grounds and firing grounds equipped with modern simulation equipment," Pankov said.
