Corvette Stoiky performs first artillery firing drill

KALININGRAD. Feb 10 (Interfax-AVN) - The corvette Stoiky (Project 20380) has completed the first round of artillery firing drills in the second phase of contractor trials, Baltic Fleet spokesman Captain Second Rank Vladimir Matveyev told Interfax on Monday.

"The Stoiky has been at sea for several days now, going through the second phase in the contractor's testing. The crew did the first artillery firing exercise at sea targets yesterday," Matveyev said.

The firing drill involved 100-millimeter and 30-millimeter artillery systems, which demonstrated flawless performances. The targets were hit, he said.

The crew are to practice firing with other weapons shortly and conduct air defense drills, he added.

Matveyev said that the corvette will be tested in conjunction with the naval aircraft, and fighter jets and helicopters will fly over the ship to test its radar and air defense and communication systems. A Kamov Ka-27 helicopter will land on the deck.

The corvette is to enter service with the Baltic Fleet at the end of the second quarter of 2014.

The Stoiky is the third serially produced ship of Project 20380. The corvette Steregushchy, assigned to the Baltic Feet in 2007, is the lead ship of the series. The first corvette of this series, the Soobrazitelny, was handed over to the fleet on October 14 2011 and the second, the Boiky, was attached to the fleet on May 16 2013.

Project 20380 corvettes have a water displacement of 2,000 tonnes. They are over 100 meters long and can develop a speed of up to 27 knots. Their endurance is 4,000 miles. Ships of this class are innovative in terms of technical characteristics and combat capabilities. They are multirole, compact and low-signature, and their systems are highly automated and integrated. All of these features compliment the ships' mission.
