Battlecruiser Petr Veliky enters port of Limassol in Cyprus

MOSCOW. Feb 12 (Interfax-AVN) - The Northern Fleet's (NF) heavy nuclear-powered missile cruiser Petr Veliky, which leads the Russian Navy's task force in the Mediterranean Sea, has paid a visit to the port of Limassol (Republic of Cyprus), NF spokesman 1st Rank Captain Vadim Serga told Interfax-AVN.

"This is already the second visit to the port of Limassol by Petr Veliky during the period of its current mission. While at the port, the personnel will be given a chance to rest and visit local places of interest. The cruiser crew will also replenish its stocks," he said.

"At the beginning of the week the crew of the Petr Veliky was involved in providing safety for the third stage of the Syrian chemical weapons' transportation in cooperation with Chinese, Danish and Norwegian naval sailors," Serga recalled. The actions of the ships involved in the provision of safety for chemical weapons' transportation were coordinated by an international staff deployed on board the cruiser.

The cruiser Petr Veliky started its long journey after leaving the NF main base in Severomorsk on October 22, 2013. On November 10 the cruiser became a headquarters for the operational command of the permanent Mediterranean naval task force which includes warships from the Northern, Black Sea, Baltic and Pacific Ocean Fleets.
