ST. PETERSBURG. Feb 20 (Interfax-AVN) - The North Fleet nuclear-powered missile cruiser Pyotr Veliky, which is accomplishing special missions in the Mediterranean, will head for Cuba in the spring, a Navy staff representative told Interfax-AVN on the sidelines of the Krasnodar submarine keel-laying ceremony at the Admiralty Shipyards on Thursday.
"The Pyotr Veliky is prepared for the oceanic voyage to Cuba according to every parameter. Upon the completion of its mission of the safe transportation of Syrian chemical weapons within an international task force, the cruiser will depart on visit to Hanava," the source said.
The Pyotr Veliky departed from the North Fleet main base, Severomorsk, on October 22, 2013. The staff of an operative command of the naval force of the North, Black Sea, Baltic and Pacific Fleets, was deployed onboard the cruiser on November 10.
The Pyotr Veliky crew assisted in the third stage of the safe transportation of Syrian chemical weapons jointly with sailors from China, Denmark and Norway.
The cruiser of Project 11442 joined the Navy in 1988. It has a displacement of 25,860 tonnes, a speed of 31 knots and a crew of 655 men.
