Ukrainian interior ministry urges extremists to surrender arms voluntarily

KYIV. Feb 20 (Interfax) - The Ukrainian Interior Ministry has urged extremists to surrender arms voluntarily, and opposition leaders, not to back radical actions, Acting Interior Minister Vitaliy Zakharchenko said.

"Today police were targeted and fired at from a combat weapon … Law enforcement, as well as civilians are dying in the streets, violence began in Kyiv and in the country's western region," the ministry said in a statement.

"The Interior Ministry is urging extremists to voluntarily surrender their weapons and return into the framework of a peaceful protest, and the opposition leaders and representatives capable of soberly assessing the situation, to distance themselves from radicals and not support them in the future," Zakharchenko said.
