Georgian president shocked by Ukrainian events, urges Yanukovych to listen to intl leaders

TBILISI. Feb 21 (Interfax) - Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili hopes that his Ukrainian counterpart Viktor Yanukovych demonstrates political will and takes steps towards stopping the bloodshed and avoids a fierce confrontation in the country.

"The use of firearms against one's own people does not become any government and it cannot go unpunished for any government either," Margvelashvili told reporters on Thursday.

He said he was shocked by the Ukrainian events.

"The Ukrainian events have taken a tragic turn and we are shocked by the videos we have seen earlier today," the Georgian president stated.

There is still a chance to stop the bloodshed, resume the dialogue and shift from an armed confrontation to a political settlement if Yanukovych demonstrates political will and takes the necessary steps, Margvelashvili said.

"Hopefully, the Ukrainian head will listen to the appeals of international leaders, take political steps and help his country avoid a very fierce confrontation," Margvelashvili stressed.
