General Postnikov-Streltsov retires as deputy head of Russian General Staff - source

MOSCOW. Feb 21 (Interfax-AVN) - Colonel-General Alexander Postnikov-Streltsov, deputy head of the Russian General Staff, has retired from military service, a source familiar with the situation told Interfax-AVN on Wednesday.

"At the end of last year, the general submitted a request asking to be dismissed from military service for health reasons. The request was granted," the source said.

The source said that " Postnikov-Streltsov may not have a successor."

"The position in which he has worked until recently may be abolished," the source said.

Alexander Postnikov-Streltsov was born in Labinsk, Krasnodar Territory, on February 23, 1957. His initial last name was Streltsov. When he was a cadet at the Kyiv Higher Military Command School named after Frunze, he married the daughter of Colonel-General Stanislav Postnikov, the head of the headquarters of the Kyiv Military District, and took a double last name Postnikov-Streltsov.

On April 19, 2007, Postnikov-Streltsov replaced General Nikolai Makarov as commander of the Siberian Military District, was transferred to Moscow (Makarov was then made the head of armaments of the Russian Armed Forces). On January 11, 2010, Postnikov-Streltsov was appointed commander-in-chief of the Russian Ground Forces.

Postnikov-Streltsov became deputy head of the Russian General Staff on April 26, 2012.
