DONETSK. Feb 28 (Interfax) - A violent scenario is unacceptable in Ukraine, said members of the Donetsk City Council.
"No violent scenario will be acceptable for us … Radical forces acting through pressure and intimidation … have been trying to sow fear in our souls and dictate their will. With the support of our voters, we are authorized to declare that such attempts are useless. The city's vital services are being maintained in full. Public order is in place and under control," the Donetsk City Council deputies said in a statement addressed to Verkhovna Rada, the Ukrainians and Donetsk residents, which was passed at a Friday session.
To preserve civilian peace across Ukraine the central authorities "must take into account the viewpoint of the people in the (country's) Southeast and to prevent their discrimination on any grounds, be it political, ethnic, national or language-related," the city council said.
Also, Verkhovna Rada must immediately disarm all the illegal armed groups in Ukraine and stop making senior appointments in law-enforcement agencies without consulting regional councils, the statement said.
"We reassure our countrymen that in making its decisions the Donetsk City Council will be using solely the interests of the city. We shall provide peace and quiet in our city's territory," the city council said.
