Manager of former U.S. air base in Kyrgyzstan put into custody - Bishkek police

BISHKEK. March 11 (Interfax) - A Bishkek court has arrested a manager of the Transit Transportation Center, a former U.S. air base, which is stationed in the Bishkek airport Manas, for a month, the press service for the Bishkek Main Interior Affairs Department said.

Brandon Cornelius, a citizen of the United States, was detained for hooliganism on March 10. On that day, a 22-year-old woman called the police around 05:30 a.m., saying that a drunken foreigner had tried to rape her and then hit her on the leg and propositioned her, offering money for sex.

The woman got into a taxi with the foreigner and asked the driver to take them to the closest police station.

"The police asked him to go into the building, but he refused and continued behaving inappropriately, breaking a desk and ripping off a police captain's epaulettes," the police said.

According to information possessed by the police, Cornelius, 29, a manager at the Transit Transportation Center, arrived in Kyrgyzstan in 2012 and his contract expires in June 2014.

A criminal case has been opened based on Article 234 (hooliganism), which carries a punishment of four to seven years in prison. The administration of the Transit Transportation Center and the U.S. Embassy in Kyrgyzstan have been notified about the detention, the Bishkek police said.
